Connect Utilities
Connect Utilities

Moving to a different home can be a tedious task that needs to be handled with careful planning. There are many things to think about when you move, and changing or moving your utility connections is one of them. In their hurry to move and handle all other things, people usually put off managing their utilities till the end. To avoid any last minute hassles, it is best to plan at least a few weeks in advance about how to connect utilities at your new home.

The first step is to make a list of all the connections - from basic utilities like electricity, water, gas and phone to cable, internet, satellite etc -so that you don’t miss out anything. Then, you should decide when to cancel these connections at your old address, keeping in mind your actual moving date. Timing is important, whether you want to connect utilities or disconnect them. So check with your service providers about the notice period, if any, for disconnecting the service and make plans accordingly.

If you are moving within the same city, you can always get the connections transferred, if the provider offers service in the area. If you are moving to a new place, you should find out about the companies that provide the utility services you are looking for. The best way to find this out is to get a list from your landlord or realtor. While some areas may have more than one provider for a service, some may leave you with no choice.

But if you do have options, compare them and choose one with reliable service and competitive prices. Arrange with the utility companies and make sure that the basics like gas, electricity and water are set up one or two days before you move in. Having everything planned out makes it easier for you to connect utilities in time and get your new home ready and waiting for you to move in.
